Brimbank council throws support behind Albion traffic lights

Brimbank council will step up its push to have traffic lights installed at a busy Albion intersection.

The council says it will write to the state government’s road safety minister and VicRoads’ chief executive about the need to install the lights at the corner of Ballarat Road and Perth Avenue “as a priority”.

Brimbank’s advocacy follows a petition with 193 signatures from the Perth Avenue Traffic Lights Action Group (PATLAG), which was submitted to the council last November.

The council first flagged the need for the traffic lights in its 2013 Albion neighbourhood plan. But the idea hasn’t been actively pursued until now.

Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said the intersection was a hazard and needed to be made safe.

“The Albion community is fed up with having to play ‘dodge-em cars’ to cross into Ballarat Road,” he said. “Albion residents have no controlled intersection from which they can access Ballarat Road to head towards the city. Putting in traffic lights would provide that controlled access, making it safer for drivers.”

Ballarat Road, and its intersection with Perth Avenue, is on the declared arterial road network, meaning it is under the care and management of VicRoads.

PATLAG member Dinesh Jayasuriya said he was pleased the council had thrown its weight behind the campaign.
