A 40-year-old man from Hillside has died after the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a car in St Albans last night.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the rider was dead when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Police believe the rider was struck by a car attempting to turn right into Sage Avenue from Sunshine Avenue about 6.30pm.

The driver, a man aged in his 70s who was behind the wheel of a Mazda 323, stopped to assist and was helping police with their inquiries until late last night.

No one else was injured in the crash.

A section of Sunshine Avenue was closed to traffic last night while police investigated the incident.

The man’s death brings the state’s road toll to 85. At the same time last year it was 92.
