Boomerang bags boom

Boomerang Bags are the hottest new accessory on the streets of Wyndham.

The colourful bags, designed as an environmentally-friendly alternative to plastic bags, are made from old and unused materials such as furniture upholstery, sheets, pillow cases, curtains and clothing.

Wyndham council and members of the community have joined together to make hundreds of colourful Boomerang Bags, which are being used at businesses and community hubs including the Little River General Store, Mel’s Foodstore, Sanctuary Lakes Bulk Food Store and the Werribee Plaza Library.

Customers are encouraged to make a donation in exchange for a bag, otherwise they can be returned upon a second visit.

Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the initiative was already making a difference in Wyndham.

“Boomerang Bags were first introduced in Wyndham in August 2017 when a group of students from Westbourne Grammar chose the idea for their environmental project,” Cr Marcus said.

“The idea has gone from strength to strength, in less than one year 700 bags have been made and over 100 kilograms of fabric has been saved from landfill.”
