A new pilot program will help Brimbank’s elderly and disabled residents care for their furry friends.
The Lort Smith dogs and cats home support program will involve volunteers helping Brimbank residents with the physical tasks involved in caring for their pets, including exercise, pet grooming or taking animals to vet appointments.
Volunteers will visit about 30 Brimbank residents who are elderly, frail or have a disability in their homes between three and four times a week between May and December.
Brimbank community well-being director Neil Whiteside says the program will be trialled across Brimbank and Moreland this year and is likely to be expanded across the north-west of Melbourne.
The pet owners will be assessed for eligibility and their pets will be required to undertake behavioural assessments.
