Lakers’ new coach wants finals action

Caroline Springs head coach Scott Korczynski has been a busy man since he was given the top job in September.

He has introduced a new training program and a fresh game plan to the Western Region Football League club, as well as trying to integrate new recruits into the Lakers’ fold.

“I have come from a Western Jets (TAC Cup) and Werribee (VFL) background so I have modified and adapted some of the things I learnt there and brought them to Caroline Springs,” he said.

“The players’ training efforts and attitudes have been fantastic and we have had around 40 or 45 on the track every night.

“I’m really enjoying it.”

Leading the list of ins at the club is three-time Hawthorn premiership player Brian Lake.

He will be joined by fellow key position player Mathew Sutton, who had a long and distinguished career with Melton South in the Ballarat Football League.

While they were recruited for their ability, Korczynski said the pair had well and truly bought into the club and had already been established as leaders in the playing group.

“They’re quality players and they have been fantastic for our group,” he said.

“They train on a regular basis, they provide good leadership at training and they’re really good role models in terms of the standards they set.

“Guys can look up to them and see that some of our more experienced and best players are setting the example on the track. I couldn’t be happier with the way they’re going.”

Caroline Springs will play practice matches against Hepburn, Hillside and Albion before meeting Manor Lakes in the first round of the division 2 competition on April 2.

Chris Bestall will again captain the club, with the rest of the leadership group to be finalised this week.

While others from outside the club have instilled Caroline Springs as one of the premiership favourites, Korczynski said the focus would be on reaching finals.

“We haven’t made finals as a senior club yet so that would be the first step,” he said. “From there we would like to see how deep we could go.

“It’s no secret the club has ambitions to move up to division 1, whether that’s this year, next year or the year after.

“That’s where we want to be in three years.

“We can only try our best and see how far we go and the first step is making the finals.”
