Strike force the key for Keilor Park

Keilor Park Soccer Club is confident it can land a quality striker for the coming season.

The state league 1 outfit believes the key position is the missing link in its push for a championship.

Despite being undermanned around goal last year, Keilor Park finished sixth.

Club president Paul Portelli says early signs suggest the Parkers will be much better equipped up front this year.

“We’ve only had a couple of training sessions, but we’re happy with the way things are coming together,” he said.

“We have a couple of strikers trialling with the club at the moment and hopefully we can snag the one that we want.

“The boys did really well last year without a main striker. It shows we have most of the squad we need. We just need to add a little bit extra … we want to be in the top two or three.”

The lack of a striker didn’t stop Keilor Park going toe to toe with some of the league’s leading teams in 2015.

The Parkers knocked off eventual premier Western Suburbs twice, outscoring their more highly fancied rivals by a combined five goals across the two games.

“The first win proved we can match the top and the second win proved it wasn’t a fluke,” Portelli said.

“Beating them on their home patch was really big for us.

“We know we can do it; it’s just a matter of getting everyone raring to go at the same time.”

Anthony Sacco will return as head coach at Keilor Park.

Portelli says it’s a huge boost for the club to have Sacco back on board for another season.

“It’s good to have that continuity. He knows how the club operates … it saves a lot of the pre-season that doesn’t need to be spent on getting used to a new coach. It allows us to get ahead.

“A lot of clubs are spending money on big players and that’s going to keep us on our toes.

“Hopefully, we will be among the top sides in the competition and push for a spot in the NPL if it’s available.”

The state league 1 season begins next month.
