Unpaid rates leads to council auction

Brimbank council will auction off an Ardeer property to recover unpaid rates.

The public auction will be held on Saturday, October 13 at the office of Doug Kay Real Estate, Sunshine.

The council resolved to sell the property, located at 737 Ballarat Road, Ardeer at its May meeting.

The property is vacant and in a derelict state.

At the May meeting, Cr Lucinda Congreve said that while selling the property was a drastic measure, it needed to be done.

“Having seen the property in question, I’m sure the community surrounding it will be glad to see us taking action,” she said.

“Not only is it a drain on council resources, but it’s also a significant impost on the surrounding community.”

The council has made numerous attempts over several years to get the property’s accounts into order, but they have all been unsuccessful.

The property will be sold to the highest bidder that is equal to or greater than the council’s independent valuation.

Under section 181 of the Local Government Act, the council has the power to sell a property, but must follow a strict process.
