Two close friends since primary school will hit the open roads of South Australia and beyond for five days in September for a boutique rally with a difference.
The only thing they need is a road map and a car.
Caroline Springs’ truckie John Mesiti and close mate, Hoppers Crossing firefighter Peter Boicovitis, will join those making up nearly 150 other teams in the Mystery Box Rally to raise money for Cancer Council research.
Described as the “mad baby brother of the Sh*tbox Rally” – or smaller, shorter, but no less ridiculous – teams arrive at the starting point in Adelaide with nothing but personal essentials and a thirst for adventure.
All money raised by the pair before then will be used to bid for a car at a private auction the day before the rally begins on September 24.
So the more money they raise, the better chance of securing their “dream” mystery box.
A minimum of $3000 must be raised for their team, Tekilla Tarkoes, to qualify.
The route remains largely a mystery too – although “outback dirt roads and majestic small towns” are promised – with teams told each morning where they will be driving that day.
“We have seen too many friends and family go through this terrible disease, so I think it’s time we contribute,” Peter said.
“We are primary school friends who have travelled and seen what this terrible disease can do to others.”
The top 10 fundraisers will be offered a place in the next Sh*tbox rally next year.
