Sunshine traders are in agreement – straws suck.

As part of a push to make the Sunshine CBD more sustainable, the Sunshine Business Association (SBA) will support and steer 80 local traders to phase out single use plastic straws through its campaign dubbed Straws Suck. The SBA will buy and distribute 80,000 paper straws and dispensers to cafes and restaurants in the Sunshine CBD.

SBA president Carson Luk said the campaign was a tremendous opportunity.

“Our cafes and restaurants are each using between 200 to 500 straws a day, which is about 16,000 to 40,000 straws a day in Sunshine,” Mr Luk said.

“We believe that through ongoing education around sustainability to traders and subsequently our customers, there is an opportunity to enhance the attractiveness of Sunshine, become sustainable, and positively affect business profits.”

Participating businesses will display ‘Say no to plastic straws’ window decals.

The campaign will also extend to single use plastic bags, take away containers and drink containers.
