Fresh on the back of the success of the TV series Sunshine, the Sunshine Photo Project is showing the suburb in a new light.
The photo exhibition, featuring eight local finalists, as well as stars of the show, showcasing their Sunshine stories through the camera lens, was developed as a partner project to the SBS drama.
Anh Phan is a teacher by trade, but branched out into photography to be part of the exhibition.
“I thought it was a really good opportunity, and something very different for me,” she said.
“I did not know much about photography in the past, but I wanted to learn more, so it was an interesting process to see how to tell a story through photos.”
Phan’s series of photos, titled Vietnam, Sunshine and Me, explores her own Vietnamese heritage in her own neighbourhood.
“I wanted to create a series around culture,” she said. “ I’m passionate about seeing different cultures and how they interact with each other.
“I spent a morning following my mum through Sunshine, so she’s in there … there’s photos of my own kitchen. Through the photo series, I wanted people to embrace their own cultures.
“It was amazing to see everyone’s hard work on display. All us finalists created a bond, and it was great to see all their work up on the wall at the exhibition.”
The Sunshine Photo Project exhibition will be on display at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre until November 30.
