The Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium, St Albans Community Centre (STACC) and the West Sunshine Community Centre could be turned into mass hospitals if the COVID-19 crisis overwhelms the health system.
The state government recently called on all councils to provide it with a pandemic plan.
Brimbank council infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the plan covers a number of situations.
“The pandemic plan details council’s role in pandemic planning to assist in reducing the impacts of a pandemic and to provide support and recovery assistance throughout the duration of a pandemic,” he said.
“This includes the need to ensure council continues delivering essential local services.”
As part of the plan, the council was asked to identify large areas which could act relief centres.
“Council also has a number of facilities that are designated as relief centres in an emergency response, which include the Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium, St Albans Community Centre (STACC) and the West Sunshine Community Centre.
“Council has received no requests for assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) at this stage in relation to access to facilities. However, council will continue to work closely with DHHS to provide local responses to the COVID-19 pandemic where required.”
