Brimbank’s Sunvale Community Park has been nominated as a finalist in the inaugural International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), World Green City Awards 2022.
Eighteen entries from cities around the world have been shortlisted for the awards, which celebrate projects that are transforming the world into a greener and healthier place to live. Specifically, the program recognises initiatives relying on a greater use of plants and nature to create better city environments.
Brimbank Council has been nominated in the ‘Living Green for Health and Wellbeing’ category. This category highlights projects that address the medical, behavioural and social determinants of health for residents. The Brazilian city of Fortaleza and the Netherlands city of Utrecht are the other nominees in this category.
Sunvale Community Park, in the heart of Sunshine, was developed under Council’s award-winning Creating Better Parks Policy and Plan. The park offers so much diversity with plenty of green space for active and recreational play, a skate park, Indigenous art work, an edible garden as well as sheltered areas for social gatherings.
Brimbank Mayor Cr Jasmine Nguyen said council was “thrilled that the design of Sunvale Community Park has been recognised for the prestigious global awards“.
“These awards are great recognition of the commitment council has made in creating green urban spaces that make our city a better place to live,“ she said.
“Sunvale Community Park is highlighting the importance a well-designed, leafy nature park has in improving the liveability and wellbeing of the community.
“Creating beautiful green environments where everyone in our community can feel welcome will continue to be a key focus for Brimbank.”
The award winners will be announced at an event to be held in September/October 2022.
