Pair fined over dog charges

Two women have been found guilty of animal cruelty charges at the Sunshine Magistrates Court.

The court heard that a Brimbank council animal management officer and RSPCA Victoria Inspector Sarah Gilbert attended a property in March, believed to be occupied by Patricia and Shania Kirby, after receiving a report of concern for the welfare of two dogs.

The dogs were found in an emaciated condition, without access to drinking water or shelter. At the time, neither of the Kirbys were residing at the property, and there were no regular arrangements in place for the care of the dogs.

The dogs were seized and taken to an RSPCA veterinary clinic for examination where it was found the degree of emaciation was caused by starvation over a period of several weeks.

Shania Kirby was sentenced with conviction and fined $7500. Patricia Kirby was sentenced with conviction and fined $5000.

They were each ordered to pay $311.40 in costs, and both were given a 10-year order banning them from being in charge of any animal.
