A memorial that pays homage to Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War has been unveiled at Sunshine’s Kevin Wheelahan Gardens.
The project, predominately organised by the Vietnamese Community Association in partnership with Brimbank council, pays respect to the memory and sacrifices made by the 521 Australians who lost their lives during the conflict.
Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said that the council was honoured to unveil the Vietnam War memorial almost a year to the day after the first sod was turned.
“This is a significant project and is an expression of gratitude to the Vietnamese people involved in the war, and the Vietnamese community who now reside in Australia – a large number of whom have chosen to call Brimbank home,” Cr Giudice said.
The gardens are already home to an avenue planting that honours the veterans from the Sunshine District who served in World War I. Cr Giudice said the addition of a Vietnam War memorial added another layer of remembrance and provided further synergy with nearby Sunshine RSL.
“The beautiful Kevin Wheelahan Gardens and memorial will serve our community as a place of remembrance and reflection,” she said.
“The people of Brimbank can spend time honouring loved ones and understand the sacrifices made by our brave fallen soldiers.”
Sunshine RSL president Gary Collins said the memorial is a fitting tribute.
“It looks fantastic and is a great add-on to the RSL,” Mr Collins said. “The memorial was completely funded by donations and spearheaded by the Vietnamese people, which adds further significance to it.”
