The controversial plan to build 72 townhouses at the former Keilor Park primary school site won’t go ahead.
Minister for Major Projects Jacinta Allen confirmed the decision to halt the project in a letter to Member for Niddrie Ben Carroll.
“Development Victoria’s proposal … sought to balance the delivery of affordable housing, the provision of diverse housing for the area’s growing population, and the retention of neighbourhood character,” she said.
“In developing this proposal, Development Victoria has consulted with Brimbank City Council … In light of the concerns you have raised, I have requested that Development Victoria review the feedback from the community and … examine the current proposal.
“Until this work has been completed, and further consultation undertaken, I can confirm that no planning permit application will be submitted to Brimbank City Council.”
Mr Carroll welcomed the review and said the community had made itself heard.
“I have had many conversations with locals about the proposal and given their concern I strongly recommend that the proposal be reviewed, mindful that 72 townhouses is not acceptable,” he said.
Mr Carroll said he wanted Development Victoria to work with the community for a development it can be proud of.
The Keilor Park Community Group, which was formed to oppose the development, maintains it would prefer the land be for public use.
