Council named best newcomer

Brimbank council has been named as the best newcomer to the national Garage Sale Trail program.

The Garage Sale Trail, which has been running for seven years, is Australia’s largest re-use, waste education and community event.

Brimbank entered the trail for the first time in 2017, a move that proved popular with locals.

More than 18,500 items were listed for sale and more than 2000 shoppers took part in the event.

The average participating household in Brimbank made $238 per sale.

The trail’s success in Brimbank was highlighted at the Garage Sale Trail Local Government Awards for Excellence, with Brimbank council taking home the award for best newcomer.

Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said she was thrilled with the award and the fantastic response from the local community.

“The Garage Sale Trail is proving to be a favourite event amongst the community and a fun way to create positive social and environmental change,” she said.

“Brimbank did a fabulous job supporting the program that led to over 94 sales and stalls. It’s a great way for communities to connect and interact with their neighbourhood around the issue of resource consumption and the environmental benefits of re-use and recycling.”
