A Brimbank COVID-19 support service is helping 25 people affected by the pandemic on average each week.
Brimbank council launched the COVID Connector program in partnership with the state government and community organisations soon after the pandemic began.
The program has become a local one stop shop to help community members navigate the information they need around testing, vaccination and what to do if they have COVID-19.
Among the support provided by the program is providing temporary food relief, face masks and other essential items, helping residents access vaccination information, find safe ways to travel to a vaccine appointment, advice on financial assistance and advice on what to do if you have COVID-19.
Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said council hadn’t seen a change of demand in recent weeks despite the increase of cases.
As of the middle of last week, there was nearly 5400 active COVID-19 cases in Brimbank. Overall, there has been more than 25,000 cases in Brimbank since the start of the pandemic.
“The COVID Connector program has helped support vulnerable and isolated people living in Brimbank by offering practical assistance and emotional support during COVID-19,” Cr Nguyen said.
“The COVID Connector program helps community members navigate the information they need around testing, vaccination and what to do if you have COVID-19. The program also includes food relief for families in isolation.
“Overall the demand and type of support has been consistent over the last two years with an average of 25 referrals per week for an estimated 1,200 people.
“The program is available 8am-6pm Monday to Friday and is staffed by council team members who can work with residents, agencies and health services to help find the information and support someone needs.”
