Lunchtime chess club sessions in the Copperfield College library have paid off for five players who faced off against the top players in Victoria in the middle years state chess final on October 28.
Although they did not progress to the national competition, the players did well given three only took up chess just this year.
All of them won at least two games.
Team captain Ed Win, who has been playing for four years, came home with four wins.
School chess co-ordinator Kellie Jasper said it was the first time anyone from the campus had made it to the chess state finals.
“We’re extremely proud that they were there,” she said.
