A leading campaigner has urged the community to help continue the fight against the proposed expansion of the Melbourne Regional Landfill at Ravenhall.
Last month the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) approved an additional seven cells at the landfill, which will allow the site to operate until about 2036. The decision drew the ire of both the Brimbank and Melton councils and community groups.
Stop the Tip lead campaigner Marion Martin said the decision was disappointing, but vowed to continue the fight.
“We’ve been given information from lawyers that they believe there are errors of law in the VCAT judgment,” Ms Martin said.
“I believe the council’s have until the 15th of this month to lodge an appeal, so we’ll wait to see if they take it to the Supreme Court.”
In a bid to push the councils to take the matter to the Supreme Court, Stop the Tip have created an online petition.
Residents are asked to sign the petition which reads: “Dear Councillor, I am writing to urge you to continue fighting on behalf of our community to stop Cleanaway’s massive expansion of the Ravenhall Tip.”
Ms Martin said it was vital those concerned signed. “We really want to give the community one final opportunity to say something,” she said.
“We’ve spent six years fighting this, but a lot of people don’t seem to get the information so we’re trying to spread the word on this push.”
Both councils were still reviewing their options at the time of publication.
