More children will be able to explore the great outdoors following a funding boost for a Parks Victoria junior ranger program.
The program, which runs at Brimbank Park and Organ Pipes National Park during school holidays, encourages kids to explore Victoria’s parks with the help of a Parks Victoria ranger.
Children can take part in activities such as historic tours, night walks and rambles.
Participants in last week’s program at Organ Pipes National Park spent the day searching for minibeasts in Jacksons Creek, which were then examined under a microscope.
Outdoor adventure retailer, Macpac, recently donated $400,000 to the program, which will help Parks Victoria to run the program over the next three years.
Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the partnership will help Parks Victoria to engage with new audiences. “This partnership with Macpac will help grow the much-loved program, connecting more children and their families with the environment and creating advocates for the future of conservation,” she said.
“Everyone should have the opportunity to connect with nature, especially children. I encourage all families to take advantage of this great program.
Parks Victoria education and interpretation officer James Adams said the junior ranger program was designed to inspire curiosity.
“At Parks Victoria, we believe nature is essential for human health and wellbeing. Spending time playing and learning outdoors provides children with developmental benefits such as improved physical and mental health and social connections,” he said.
