Airport West resident Aaron Smith is pounding the pavements in readiness for the coming Run Melbourne charity event.
Participants can choose a five-kilometre run or walk, a 10-kilometre run or half-marathon to raise money for the charity of their choice.
Mr Smith has already started ramping up his training schedule in preparation for a 10-kilometre run on July 26.
“I’d like to challenge myself and get fit,” he said.
But it’s not just running that has him eager to take on the challenge.
He has chosen to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation in memory of his neighbour, who battled cancer.
“My next door neighbour got cancer and passed away last year. I thought it would be a great way to help out a group that helped him out,” he said. “A lot of people are touched by cancer and this happened right next door. That’s the big motivator in raising these funds and trying to help where I can.”
Mr Smith said the event was a great way to bring the community together and give something back.
“Every bit helps.”
