Redkite tokens, sausage sizzles and donation tins have shown the power of community at Taylors Hill.

Last week, Coles Taylors Hill staff and customers, together with representatives of national cancer charity Redkite, celebrated the community’s efforts in raising $20,000 for the cancer charity.

The Taylors Hill store has been raising funds for Redkite since partnering with the charity in 2013. Redkite supports children and people aged up to 24 with cancer, and their families.

Store manager Tony Baldassarro said staff and customers had been actively involved in raising money for the past two years.

“It’s something the team do very, very well,” Mr Baldassarro said.

“When it comes to charity they always go beyond the call of duty to help raise money, and the community digs deep, too.”

Mr Baldassarro said Coles was both a store and a community hub, which helped support the wider community at any chance.

The $20,000 is enough to fund 347 hours of social worker support – providing information, practical help and counselling during a cancer treatment – for families while they’re at Melbourne hospitals.

“I think it’s important to everyone,” Mr Baldassarro said.

“Cancer can strike anyone at any given time and Redkite supports families going through difficult times; it’s a great cause.”

Five cents from the sale of every loaf of Coles Smart Buy and Coles Brand bread is donated to Redkite.
