Students at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College are making an impact in their community, with the donation of women’s sanitary products to charity.
As part of International Women’s Day earlier this month, the school collected products for the Caroline Chisholm Society, and counsellor Joy Georgey said the support was positive.
“The response was wonderful, and it tied in International Women’s Day with our own Respectful Relationships program, and was also inspired by another charity called Share the Dignity,” Ms Georgey said.
“The idea is that these sanitary products will reach victims of domestic violence, the homeless, and those who are struggling to get the basic sanitary needs they need.
“We believe that hygiene is not a luxury.”
With 12 buckets of products collected this year, Ms Georgey said she hoped to do the drive again next year and improve on a strong beginning.
“I think when we do this again we can do even better,” she said.
“A big part of it is changing the perception that periods are just secret women’s business and shouldn’t be discussed.
“Part of Respectful Relationships is about promoting positive gender roles, and reducing the shame around these things, so it’s an ongoing process and one we hope will do some good in the community.”
