New County Court Chief Judge appointed

Amanda Chambers was appointed as the new Chief Judge of the County Court of Victoria.

Her Honour is the County Court’s first female Chief Judge and replaces Justice Peter Kidd who was appointed to the Court of Appeal earlier this year.

Chief Judge Chambers has extensive experience across Victoria’s criminal and civil justice systems, having been a judicial officer for more than 19 years.

Her Honour has served as a judge of the County Court since 2015 and led its Criminal Division since 2024, overseeing serious criminal cases across the state.

Chief Judge Chambers was President of the Children’s Court of Victoria from 2015 to 2021, driving reforms to improve outcomes for children and families in the justice system.

Prior to her appointment to the County Court, Chief Judge Chambers was a magistrate of the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria from 2006 to 2015, presiding over criminal, civil and family violence cases.

A member of the Judicial Commission of Victoria and the Judicial College of Victoria from 2015 to 2021, Chief Judge Chambers also served as a part-time Commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission between 2008 and 2012.

Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny congratulated Chief Judge Chambers on her appointment.

“With decades of experience and proven leadership, Chief Judge Chambers is well placed to lead the County Court,” said Ms Kilkenny.

“I also thank Justice Peter Kidd for his outstanding leadership and contribution to Victoria’s justice system during his time as Chief Judge.”
