Brimbank council is marking this year’s mental health month by organising events aimed at helping residents’ mental health and wellbeing.
October is National Mental Health Month, which advocates for and raises awareness of mental health and wellbeing throughout the month.
Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said prioritising mental health has been “more important than ever” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“With social isolation a part of daily lives for the time being, we want to give our community ways to stay active, healthy and connected during this difficult time, and to keep a check on their mental health,” Cr Rasic said.
“The pandemic has had a major impact on us all physically, mentally, financially, professionally and socially.
“It has also caused significant and understandable emotional distress. I encourage community members who may be struggling to reach out to the support and services available.
Council has organised a range of events for residents to take advantage of, including; online yoga and meditation; ‘social connection and mental health’ online session; ‘art for everyone’ workshop series; community conversations; an interactive dance party; ‘wellness for carers’; and ‘learn how to create a wellbeing plan’.
Cr Rasic said she was “extremely passionate” about improving access to mental health support.
“Mental health support is vital for the wellbeing of our community,” she said.
“We are committed to supporting our community and residents suffering from mental health conditions.
“I’m very pleased that earlier this year council welcomed a state government announcement that Brimbank will become the home of a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, as part of the state’s response to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.”
