Cleaning up the creek

A group of Albion residents sick of seeing Kororoit Creek filled with litter are taking action.

The creek bed between Forrest Street and Fraser street was strewn with litter following heavy rainfall last week.

Albion resident Jessie Kernahan walks by the creek every day and said she felt compelled to take matters into her own hands.

“I walk the dog along the trail every day and there’s always rubbish along it,” she said.

“I noticed last year we had a really heavy rain and it pushed a lot of rubbish along. I contacted the council, but they didn’t do a good job of cleaning it.

“So after our recent heavy rain my partner and I went down and there was so much rubbish down there.”

“It was absolutely chocked with rubbish. It was crazy. We ended up going back with four bags which we filled really quickly. It was never ending.”

Ms Kernahan is now calling on other locals to help with the clean-ups.

“It’s clearly going to be ongoing, so I figured I’d put the word out and ask if people may be interested in joining us for an hour or so once a week down there.

“I believe in being the change you want to see … and more hands mean less work.”

While she’s lobbied the council in the past, Ms Kernahan said she will ask for bins to be installed along the trail.

“There’s such a wonderful wildlife population down there and it would be a shame if something happened to it.”

Ms Kernahan has set up a Facebook page for those interested in joining in the clean-ups.
