A Sydenham student is set to officiate one of the country’s largest football carnivals.
Sam Dunne said his selection in the School Sport Victoria, Australian football umpire’s team was a fantastic opportunity.
“To umpire a tournament with kids from all around the country is really cool,” he said. “I did it last year and really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to heading down to Launceston.”
Dunne said it was also a terrific opportunity to expand his skills.
“I get to umpire with people from all over the country, so it’s a good way to get to know each other and learn a thing or two.”
At 17, Dunne now has more than four years of experience and hopes to continue developing his career.
“I just lost interest in playing footy, but really wanted to stay involved in the game, which is when I turned to umpiring.
“It’s been better than I thought it would be, I really love being around football competitions.”
While he’s enjoyed the ride, Dunne said there’s been a few challenges along the way.
“I think the biggest thing you have to develop is a thick skin on the field,” he said.
The School Sport Australia Championships will be held from July 27 to August 3.
