Sunshine is on the verge of breaking into the Western Region Football League’s top five after a classy win on Saturday.
The Kangaroos were at their dominant best, smashing Port Melbourne by 54 points at JL Murphy Reserve.
After holding a nine-point lead at quarter- time, the Sunshine juggernaut clicked into gear shortly after the resumption of play.
The Kangaroos booted seven goals across the next two quarters while shutting the Colts down defensively.
Port Melbourne’s troubles in front of the big sticks continued through the remainder of the afternoon.
Despite being on their home ground, the Colts could manage just four goals for the game. There were no such problems for Sunshine forwards Macauley Goring and Lachlan Hutchesson, who each booted four.
The pair was well supported by Jesse McLellan, who was ultra-impressive around the ground, while Jake Allan and Matthew Hutchesson were also strong contributors.
The 14.14 (98) – 4.20 (44) win is Sunshine’s sixth of the year and continues the club’s remarkable turnaround.
The Kangaroos are now just two points outside the division 1 top five.
In a huge match this weekend, Sunshine will take on third-placed Hoppers Crossing. The Kangaroos’ supporters will also have one eye on the Altona-Albion match.
Altona is currently fifth and in the box seat to secure the last remaining place in the finals.
OTHER GAMES
Meanwhile, St Albans’ hopes of playing finals dropped even further with a 37-point loss to Werribee Districts on Saturday. The Saints are now eight points outside the top five, with three games remaining.
Elsewhere at the weekend, Deer Park defeated Albion and Spotswood got the better of Altona.
In division 2, Caroline Springs proved no match for the top-of-the-table West Footscray. The Lakers went down 13.16 (94) to 3.2 (20).
