Selina Tsang was awarded the Brimbank Young Citizen of the Year in January. She spoke to Ewen McRae
What is your connection to Brimbank?
I have been affiliated with Brimbank for the most part of my childhood and young adulthood. I attended St Pauls Primary school in Sunshine West and then moved into Marian College, which was conveniently right next door, to complete my high school education.
What do you like best about the area?
Brimbank as a community has changed greatly from what I remember it being as a kid. However, one aspect that remains close to my heart is Sunshine library. This place not only serves as one of my fondest memories as a young child it also has evolved into being a place where I regularly frequent to study for upcoming tests and exams.
Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in Brimbank?
This is a tricky question, as the diversity in cultures in Brimbank enables a tremendous depth of food. I occasionally like to go for Vietnamese food at St Albans, but since we have just gotten through winter, I would say my favourite place for a feed would be Chubs Kebabs in Sunshine Market Place.
What did it mean for you to win the Brimbank Young Citizen of the Year award in January?
I honestly did not think I was going to receive this award – it came to me quiet unexpectedly, so it took a while for it to really sink in. Being acknowledged for this award was a validation of the work done by the Marian Leos. The time and effort that all the members in the group put in was going into something way over our heads.
What has the year been like since you got the award?
From attending my first citizenship ceremony to speaking in front of a bunch of high school students on International Women’s Day, it has been an eye-opening experience. Not much has changed. Although I have moved on from the Marian Leos, joining the Brimbank Leos was not an incredibly hard transition.
What do you have planned for the future, now that your time as young citizen of the year is coming to an end?
Service to the community will always be something I strive to do more of. I would love to try and volunteer outside the comfort of my own community. The prospect of travelling overseas alongside a group of people motivated to do something through a common goal is very appealing to me.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I love mathematics – I really do! It is just one of those things … I tell people that I like it and a good majority of them scowl.
