My Time for some parental support

Families navigating the disability support system can get some relief through a new group program at Sunshine for families of children with autism.

Tweddle Child and Family Health Care recently launched My Time, a free weekly group at the Sunshine Special Developmental School.

My Time offers parents and carers the chance to access resources and share experiences with others with special needs children, up to the age of 16.

A trained facilitator guides discussions and connects parents with support services, while a skilled play helper engages children to give parents and carers a break.

National MyTime director Annette Michaux says it is important for parents and carers to get support.

“Research tells us that many parents of children with disability struggle with finding time to look after themselves, and that social isolation is a real danger for these unsung heroes” she said.

MyTime co-ordinator Kylee Brealey, who has a child with special needs, has been involved with the program for more than six years.

“Not a week goes by where a parent won’t share their struggles or ask for advice from others, who know exactly where they are coming from,” she says. “Parents know that they can come to My Time and not feel judged.”

My Time runs Tuesdays during school terms from 9.30am to 11.30am. For information, go to www.tweddle.org.au or call 9689 1577.
