Basketball

Werribee Devils put up a good fight before going down 89-80 to Corio Bay Stingrays in the Big V basketball men’s championship at the Viatek Centre on Saturday night. The clash between the cellar-dweller Devils (4-16) and second-placed Stingrays (18-2) was supposed to be more cut and dried, but the Devils came to play, making it a tighter than expected contest. Jonathan Sonda finished with a double-double 26 points and 10 rebounds. The Devils will play a tough double-header this weekend, starting with Hawthorn Magic (7-13) at Eagle Stadium
on Saturday night, followed by a trip to the Waverley Falcons (16-4) on Sunday. In women’s division 1, the Werribee Devils lost 73-63 to the Sunbury Jets despite 21 points from Katrina Vogelezang.

Soccer

Werribee City has somehow managed to avoid falling into the NPL Victoria relegation zone despite a horror stretch of five successive losses. The Bees are, however, skating on thin ice after a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of the Melbourne Knights at Knights Stadium on Sunday. Dean Tomeski scored the Bees’ only goal, a late consolation in the 83rd minute. The Bees will be desperate for points when they travel to Pascoe Vale on Friday night.

Football

Point Cook eased to a 108-point win over Chadstone in the VAFA division 4 at Jordan Reserve on Saturday, halting a two-game losing skid. Mason Kip, Ricky Munn (five goals) and Daniel Sidwell (four) were prominent for the Bulldogs in the big win. Westbourne Grammarians had a 39-point victory over Manningham Cobras to retain second spot on the ladder.

Netball

Werribee Centrals overcame a stern challenge from Inverleigh to win 55-40 in GDFL netball at Galvin Park on Saturday. Ellie Tubbs had the radar working again, scoring 41 goals, while Madeline Hodgson chimed in with 14. The Centurions are a game clear on top of the ladder ahead of Saturday’s trip to take on lowly Corio.
