Hit-run conviction

Melbourne tradesman Matthew Terrance O’Connor, 28, has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing cyclist Peter McGuffie in a hit-run incident in West Footscray last year. O’Connor, who fled the scene following the June 23 crash, was given a non-parole period of three years.

Bike impounded

A Williamstown man had his motorbike impounded after being caught travelling at 126km/h in a 60km/h zone in Yarraville last week. The 46-year-old rider was intercepted by officers finishing a booze bus shift in Hyde Street about 12.25am on Wednesday.

Bridge too far

Another container truck crashed into the notorious Napier Street bridge last Thursday, with a shipping container toppling off the back. The 4metre-high bridge has been hit close to 70 times since 2005, but VicRoads has no plans to lower the road under the bridge.
