News in brief

Industrial action ends

Ship unloading has resumed at the Coode Island terminals after workers returned to the site following snap industrial action. Stop-work action was taken to highlight plans to cut staffing levels, which workers argued would have elevated the risk of a major catastrophe involving chemicals stored at the site, putting Yarraville, Footscray and Newport residents at risk.

Townhouses approved

Hobsons Bay council last week approved an application to build 11 three-storey and four two-storey townhouses at 3-39 Nelson Place, Williamstown. The lot is part of the former Port Phillip Woollen Mills site in Williamstown.

Health workers stop work

Women’s Health West workers in Footscray have held a stop-work protest as part of their enterprise bargaining campaign. The Australian Services Union is pushing for new conditions around leave and superannuation that management argues the service cannot afford.

Beach access improved

Accessible beach matting has been rolled out at Altona and Williamstown beaches, with wheelchairs for children and adults available via online booking.
