A recount will be held for the East Riding election which took place on Saturday, August 27 at the request of Mr. Bill Russ one of the losing candidates. However, the request has not prevented the winning candidate, Cr. Stuart Southwick, from being elected shire president for the coming year.

September 2, 1987

Plans to build a $55 million theme park near Werribee are uncertain following the purchase of the Western Gardens Pty Ltd 220 hectare site by a Queensland property development firm. Details of the contract, which gives Pettit and Sevitt Industries control over Western Gardens proposed “adventure park” plans on the property at the Princes Hwy between Laverton and Werribee, were released last Wednesday.

A major vegetable industry and a toxic dump cannot exist side by side, Werribee South farmers told a 1000-strong crowd which rallied in the city for the community’s biggest anti-toxic dump campaign last Sunday. Local farmers raised their voices for the first time in a united front at the rally outside Parliament House.

A source within Victoria Police has raised fears about what impact a second police station in the City of Wyndham could have on staff at Werribee police station and their ability to serve the community. The comments came as Wyndham Mayor Shane Bourke last week criticised the State Government for delays in establishing a new station and called for assurances that it would be adequately staffed.
