A threat to evacuate 2000 people from the West Melton Estate has been averted by the Melton Sewerage Authority. At its meeting on Monday, the authority agreed, in principle, to take over West Melton’s sewerage plant on Coburns Road. The decision follows threats by property developers to close the plant and call in the army to help evacuate desperate residents. Lack of sewerage facilities would also have meant closing a shopping centre.

Fence-high grass, rocks and rubble are not what the doctor ordered, but that’s what surrounds the Sunshine Prince Henry’s Hospital site. Davitt Kerr, whose Santiago Street, St Albans, home backs onto the hospital site, said last week that, apart from the unsightly look, the area harbors Tiger snakes. “We had one in our backyard where the kids play,” he said.

A $21 million plan by Brimbank council to extend Kings Road, St Albans, to the Calder Highway would almost certainly speed up development of the huge Sydenham regional shopping centre, the council’s chief commissioner said last week. Mr Ross MacKenzie told The Advocate he flew to Canberra last week to lobby the Minister for Regional Development, Mr Howe, for money to extend the road by about five kilometres.

Police used capsicum spray to restrain a St Albans East man who threatened to kill officers and himself with two meat cleavers last week. The man’s family called police to a Williams Street home about 11.30am on Tuesday after he allegedly threatened to harm himself. Senior Sergeant Doug Tanner said police followed the man on foot 150 metres down Williams Street, past the Leslie Street intersection.
