Ardeer filmmaker wants more diversity on our screens

Filmmaker Daniel Schultheis, pictured, reckons there’s a shortage of multicultural faces on Australian screens.

So the Ardeer resident has created a project to change what he views as a lack of diversity.

His filmmaking project will teach migrants and refugees living in Brimbank how to create films and how to tell their stories of settling in Australia.

“I’m really interested in stories about how multiculturalism contributes to life in Victoria, and particularly in Melbourne’s west,” he said.

“It’s about diversifying who we see on our screens and stages.”

To help him, Brimbank council has provided a $1600 establishment grant, as part of its 2016-17 community grants program.

Mr Schultheis, who started Brimbank Cinespace, a culturally diverse filmmaking and theatre organisation, has worked in film training for about 15 years.

He says the new project should be up and running before the end of the year.
