A pet set for the ages

Aged-care home Mercy Place Wyndham has welcomed in more than 30 children from Thomas Chirnside Kindergarten as part of its intergenerational activities.

Mercy Place Wyndham puts a strong emphasis on the importance of pet therapy and interaction between generations.

So a visit from Fun Farm 2Us few furry friends was the ideal fit. Both young and old enjoyed the petting zoo activities.

Mercy Place Wyndham lifestyle co-ordinator Anne Irwin said intergenerational activities allows the home’s residents to connect with children who are often a similar age to their own grandchildren, encouraged them to keep active and enjoy social inclusion.

“To bring the children, it creates a normal environment for the residents,” she said. “They love it – they respond to the children and respond to the animals.”

The petting zoo visit may become an annual event for the pupils and residents.
