Man in hospital after fiery crash

A driver was engulfed in flames and rushed to hospital with facial burns after a two-car collision in Sunshine on Friday morning. The crash, at 9.30am on the corner of Foundry and Harvester roads, forced the evacuation of hundreds of workers from a nearby VicRoads office and threw morning traffic into chaos. Fire crews quickly arrived at the scene to battle the blaze as wind blew thick black smoke towards Braybrook. Paramedics rushed one of the drivers, a man in his 40s, to The Alfred hospital with burns to his face and hands. Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Susannah Wilson said the man was in a stable condition. Landscaping contractor Mark Zivkovic, who was cutting grass on the nature strip, said flames engulfed the car in an instant. “There was a big bang then the fire started and one of the men leapt out.”

Trio charged over robberies

Brimbank police are investigating a series of armed robberies committed on members of the Asian community near the Ginifer train station and in Cairnlea. Keilor Downs’ Detective Senior Constable Gerry Fabbro said police had arrested one man and two male youths. They have been charged with five counts of armed robbery and six charges of conspiring to commit armed robberies. A Caroline Springs man, 20, will face Melbourne Magistrates Court on October 28. The youths, 17 and 13, will face a children’s court on October 12 and 19. Detective Senior Constable Fabbro said investigators believed attacks in West Footscray on September 1 and in Cairnlea two days later had gone unreported. He urged victims or witnesses to contact the Embona taskforce on 9365 3380.
