BRIMBANK parents have marched on State Parliament, demanding the government reveal when an autism school will be built in the western suburbs.
The government announced in May that the west’s first prep to year 12 school would be built at Laverton P-12 for $4 million.
Keilor Downs mother and Autism Angels co-founder Despina Havelas joined parents from the western suburbs and Geelong last Monday. Her son Kon, 12, attends Jackson Special School in Keilor. “Autistic children need more support,” she said. “They have the right to a quality education, like every other child.”
She said parents in the west were tired of autistic children being segregated.
“These children may have poorer outcomes in life because their education is suffering.
“The government is targeting the most vulnerable group of parents and pushing their children on the road to the pension, which is the last thing we want.”
An Education Department spokesman told the Weekly it was finalising plans for the school in Laverton.
