East Keilor car fire: Two deaths after man dies last night

HOMICIDE and arson squad detectives are investigating a car fire that killed two people in East Keilor – one of whom died immediately.

The other victim, whom police revealed was a 54-year-old Keilor East man, died last night.

Firefighters were called to a cul-de-sac in Keilor East yesterday morning after reports of a fire in a silver sports car.

One person, who was trapped in the car parked near large earth mounds in Tunnecliffe Court, died at the site. A man who fled the burning car was taken to The Alfred hospital with extensive burns, but died last night.

Acting Inspector Chris Gilbert said detectives were investigating what caused the fire and if it was deliberate.

”Nothing’s been ruled out at this stage,” he said.

Last night police were still trying to identify the person who died at the scene, who was in the passenger seat.

The person’s sex was not immediately obvious.

Acting Inspector Gilbert said witnesses had helped the injured man at the scene.

Detectives and forensic experts yesterday afternoon continued to scour the wreckage located at the end of the small court, about 150 metres from a cemetery.

A timber plank held up the mangled bonnet, while the boot was also open.

Police later appeared to widen their search, with officers scouring the mounds of dirt and grass near the burnt-out vehicle.

With the aid of State Emergency Service personnel and fire crews, police removed the charred body just before 3.30pm.

Acting Inspector Gilbert referred to the fire as an ”offence”, and said that residents need not fear any further incidents.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said that a fire investigation analysis team was assisting the police with their investigation.
