Deadly Keilor East car fire claims one, another fights for life

A person has died in a car fire in Keilor East and another is fighting for their life after suffering severe burns in the blaze.

Firefighters were called to Cemetery Road, near Thor Court, just after 10am after callers reported seeing smoke and high flames coming from a silver sports car.

One person was trapped in the car and has died. A man who managed to flee the burning car was taken to The Alfred hospital suffering extensive burns and is now in a critical condition, a Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

The fire was not believed to have involved any other cars and did not threaten any properties.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said a fire investigation analysis team was at the scene and it was not yet known if the car ran on petrol or gas or what had caused the fire, however there did not appear to have been a crash. Four fire trucks attended the blaze.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said it was not yet known if the person who died was a man or a woman.
