Regional Rail Link: Group calls for meeting

A GROUP of residents demanding improvements to Regional Rail Link plans will stage a community meeting in Sunshine West.

The first stage of the $5.3 billion project includes two new tracks between Moonee Ponds Creek and Sunshine, upgrade works on the rail bridge over Kororoit Creek, a new rail-over-road separation at Robinsons Road in Deer Park, and improvements at Sunshine station.

The project will allow regional and metropolitan trains to be separated by early 2016.

“Regional Rail Link is an important and necessary project, but it should not be built on the cheap and to the detriment of existing communities,” resident John Kodric said.

The group wants more trains to stop at Ardeer so services are improved. It also wants proper noise and pollution protection through existing suburbs; safe and easy pedestrian and bike access; electrification of the Melton, Geelong and Ballarat lines; and measures to deal with increased traffic.

The June 25 meeting is at StPauls Community Hall, Glengala Road, from 6.30pm. Details: 0423158422
