DESPITE missing a number of opportunities, the Melbourne Knights are through to the next stage of the FFV Statewide Knockout Cup.
Facing the division 2 Ballarat Red Devils, the Knights who are two levels above them scored the only goal for the game through a penalty from Jake Nakic.
Coach Andrew Marth said the game should have been over in the first 20 minutes.
“It was a different result to what we wanted, but we got the win. We dominated the first 20minutes of the game and should have been 3-0 up.
“We lacked the finishing skills and in the end ground out the score. The boys didn’t stop trying and we were lucky to get the win.”
Marth, who is in his second game as coach, gave the younger players an opportunity in the second half.
“We had the same starting 11, besides one player from the match against Green Gully.
“At half-time, I put on some of the younger players to see what they could do.
“I don’t know what they can do [being new to the club] and they performed well.”
He said they would find out who they played in the next round sometime this week.
He said focus had turned to its next match against Heidelberg.
“We are at home this week and we haven’t won at home this season yet.
“Heidelberg are around the some place as us on the ladder, so it’s a six-point game.”
Sunshine George Cross is also through to the next round after Mildura forfeited.
