ROAD tragedies could be prevented by an initiative to install breath alcohol detection devices at four local clubs.
The Rotary Club of Brimbank Central was given $22,000 by the Transport Accident Commission to fit the four units at St Albans Sports Club, Kealba Hotel, Lakeside Banquet and Convention Centre, and Club Italia.
The devices, which are now in operation, were developed by Breathometer Corporation in Tullamarine and are specifically designed for unsupervised use.
The machines have a measurement range of .000 to .999.
Rotarian Nick Pino said deaths or accidents caused by drink-driving had a devastating impact on many families.
“The aim of this project is to educate people that they shouldn’t drive home if they are under the influence of alcohol,” Mr Pino said.
“Having these devices at clubs in Brimbank could prevent tragedies in the community and that’s why we were keen to get on board. The venues have been really great and they have shown they’re responsible.”
St Albans Sports Club general manager Des Barnard said it didn’t take much for people sitting around drinking to get to .05.
“It’s good for people to have an accurate reading of their alcohol levels and I hope people use the devices properly,” he said.
Mr Pino said revenue generated by the machines would help fund Rotary youth projects for young people struggling at home or at school.
