FFV: Western Suburbs rues errors

WESTERN Suburbs has only itself to blame for a disappointing 2-1 loss to fellow-strugglers Altona Magic in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at the Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday.

The Blues started off on a positive note with striker Josip Loncaric putting the visitors in front on 30 minutes after connecting on a nicely weighted through ball.

It was the 15-minute period between the goal and the half-time whistle that coach Lenny Catalano would like to have back again.

“We made two mistakes before half-time and it cost us two goals,” he said.

The Blues were not lacking in endeavour.

They worked hard to create opportunities but lacked the polish to finish them off.

Catalano also praised the organised defensive tactics of the Magic under new coach John Markovski, who took over during the week.

“We were in control most of the game and couldn’t put away our chances. They were resilient at the back and did what they had to do to keep us out.”

The Blues were served well by the rock at the back, Fabio Dilizia and central midfielder Simon Kelly. The loss, though, leaves them in the bottom three with just four points from six games.
