Badly-needed housing hailed

BRIMBANK residents with an intellectual disability or mental illness could benefit from a new supported accommodation project.

State Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge last month announced that 53 new community-based accommodation places had been secured through funding commitments from the Victorian and federal governments.

Nine service providers across the state will provide the new places.

One of the providers, MIND Victoria, will deliver housing designed to promote independence and choice for people who have not been supported by existing disability services.

MIND Victoria general manager Judy Hamann said the non-profit organisation would target areas with high needs for disability services, including Brimbank and Wyndham.

“We will provide housing for five people in these areas,” Ms Hamann said.

“There aren’t many disability services there.”

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the funding was great news.

“Being able to assist people with a disability to live independently not only enriches their lives but provides relief and stability to their families,” he said.
