Hit-run driver sought

A HIT-run victim left seriously injured on a Sunshine road as at least five motorists drove by remains in a serious condition in Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Sudanese-born Majok Manyong suffered critical head injuries and a broken leg after being struck by a white or silver Mercedes Benz while crossing Durham Road last Monday night.

The 26-year-old lay unconscious on the road near the intersection at Watt Street as passing motorists failed to stop and help the man.

Security footage shows the Mercedes-Benz sedan hit Mr Manyong about 8pm. It did not stop.

Another five cars, including a white Toyota Avalon sedan and a gold Toyota Camry, veered around his body as he lay critically injured.

The Mercedes-Benz is believed to have a sunroof and mag wheels and police believe it is likely to have panel damage from the incident.

Detective Acting Sergeant Darryl Out said he was shocked people did not stop to help or contact police.

“I just can’t fathom why a driver would be involved in a collision with a pedestrian of all things and just not stop. I can’t understand in that lack of humanity and that lack of care for your fellow persons.”

Mr Manyong was placed in an induced coma and underwent surgery for critical head injuries.

Brimbank’s Inspector Michael Grainger said he was very concerned about the hit-run and the failure of people to stop.

“I am very concerned, but it would be wrong of me to assume that they have driven up and deliberately left him there,” he said.

“Most people in our community would stop and help and it would be wrong to make too many assumptions about this incident.”

Inspector Grainger said the first step in such a situation should be to stop and render assistance.

“If not comfortable with that, people should call triple-0 and explain the situation and what they have seen.”

Anyone else who witnessed the incident or with any other information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
