KEILOR is experiencing what life is really like in the Victorian Basketball League Big V women’s division 1.
The Thunder’s honeymoon period lasted just a week when it was 1-0 and sitting on top of the ladder on March 17.
The newly promoted team has since gone without a win, encountering some of the top sides in the competition, including title front runners Altona and Whittlesea.
On Saturday night the out-of-form Thunder slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat by the formidable Warrnambool Mermaids, 66-50 at the Keilor Basketball Stadium.
The Steve Toy-coached side fell behind by nine points at the end of the first period and could not reel back the deficit.
This was despite the best efforts of Thunder’s ever consistent Jessica Francke (12 points and eight rebounds), Karla Mavor (11 points and seven rebounds) and Michelle Reid (10 points and five rebounds).
Tough games are not behind the Thunder.
The next month will be just as testing, starting with Sunday’s home date with eighth-ranked Warrandyte. Following that will be clashes with Latrobe City (third) and Hawthorn (fourth).
Perhaps the only upside of this gruelling draw is that the back end should give the Thunder a slight reprieve.
