KENSINGTON-based charity SecondBite last year delivered more than 67,200 kilograms of fresh food to community food programs across Victoria’s western suburbs.
With a donation from Freemason’s Victoria, that astounding figure will be bettered in 2012.
SecondBite exists to acquire left-over or surplus healthy food from events and wholesalers and redistributes to the needy.
A brand new Mercedes Sprinter van donated by the Freemasons of the Western District to SecondBite
will now be used to deliver an additional 7000kg of fresh, rescued food every week.
Freemasons Victoria Grand Master Bob Jones handed over the keys to the new vehicle last week. The van is the first in the SecondBite fleet to have the colourful new “fruit” branding.
SecondBite delivered 67,292kg to 56 community food programs in the Western District Area in 2011, which equates to over 100,000 meals. Programs to benefit include the Ardoch Youth Foundation in Sunshine and the Hobsons Bay Christian Church in Newport, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in West Melbourne, and The Venny in Kensington.
SecondBite director Katy Barfield said the van donation was an incredibly generous way to give practical assistance to SecondBite. “It will enable SecondBite to rescue and redistribute an additional 7000kg every week – enough fresh food to provide 14,000 meals every week to people in need. That’s over 700,000 meals every year.”
