YOUNG Brimbank athletes no longer have to travel to access first-class training and competition facilities, following the opening of a new athletics track at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve.
The $1.5million international-standard synthetic track is the first of its kind in the municipality. It replaces a 400-metre grass track and can be used by local clubs, schools and private trainers.
Keilor Little Athletics Centre president Sam Barbuto says he’s delighted Brimbank now has top facilities.
“It’s great we have this track because it’s an all-weather surface and can be used by so many different groups,” Barbuto says. “Schools will run their athletics carnivals here.”
Brimbank Council chairman Peter Lewinsky says the opening of the track on March 23 makes the reserve a centre of state significance. “The completion of this track and its place alongside the playing fields and athletics pavilion at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve brings together a complete sporting precinct.”
Brimbank will also be able to bid to host regional and state athletics events. The track was funded by the council and state government.
